To Our Valued Customers:

According to current weather forecasts, winter storm Nemo is slated to blanket the Northeastern corridor with heavy snow over the next 24 to 36 hours. This will undoubtedly impact freight rail transportation in the coming days for the immediate area and points beyond.  While there are no official service advisories from the major rail carriers regarding track closures or volume restrictions at this moment, we will be monitoring for available updates and will distribute them as they become available. Please contact your assigned QTS representative of call 800-443-2599 for further information.

CPRS Provides Updates on Flooding

Please see the latest notifications from CPRS:

Customer Bulletin: CP Operations Update- High Water Impacts

The Souris River water levels continue to recede between Minot and Velva, North Dakota. CP Engineering Services crews are working from both east and west ends of the washout area as the water moves back. There are no remaining dikes across our track at any location.

Because of the amount of water in the area, and the major restoration work underway, we are still forecasting the line to be out for another ten days. With the opening of our line in Canada between the border and Moose Jaw, we have been able to move cars west of Minot up into Canada and are adding them to the rerouted traffic over the Noyes/'Emerson gateway. Detours over other railways continue to assist with keeping shipments current. There is no impact to shipments moving between western and eastern Canada.

CPRS Sends Update on Flooding & Washout

Here's the latest from CPRS regarding the devastating flooding impacting their line.

June 21, 2011

Customer Bulletin: Mainline Outage in B.C. - High Water Impacts in Southern Saskatchewan and North Dakota

At approximately 1445 PT, a mainline outage occurred at Albert Canyon between Golden and Revelstoke in British Columbia. Crews are on scene and once an estimate of line clear is available, we will provide an update.
In southern Saskatchewan, the Souris River remains high and fast-flowing on portions of the Weyburn Subdivision between the Canada/U.S. border and Moose Jaw. Our reroute plan is fully activated with shipments being moved over other gateways including over the Great Lakes. It is estimated this part of the line will be out of service for a week to ten days.

Just south of the border, the situation at Minot, North Dakota has worsened over the past 24 hours with city officials issuing a mandatory evacuation notice to over 10,000 residents. If the water reaches the newly predicted levels, it will top the record set in 1881 by over six feet and put CP's mainline out of service sometime Wednesday as it rises. The river is expected to crest on Monday, June 27.

To mitigate the delays in the Portal Corridor from Glenwood to the border at Portal, we are pulling shipments back to Glenwood to fold into the trains being routed over the Noyes/Emerson and eastern gateways. Depending on the routing of the shipments, delays between 24 and 48 hours will occur. There is no impact to traffic moving between eastern and western Canada.
To view photos of the washouts and a map of the areas that are out of service and under watch, please click here.

As the conditions change, embargos will be amended and/or removed. To view or subscribe to updates on embargoed locations, please click here.

CPRS Announces Washout

Please see the below notice from CPRS:

June 20, 2011

Customer Bulletin: Washout in Southern Saskatchewan

Torrential rains in Southern Saskatchewan over the weekend resulted in the swelling of the Souris River, forcing provincial officials to release water from the Rafferty Dam. As a consequence of the resulting flooding, at 2015 CT on Sunday, a washout occurred on CP's mainline at Roche Percee, SK between the Canada/U.S. border and Moose Jaw, SK.

As water remains high, active mobilization of resources is underway so CP crews can initiate repairs as soon as possible. It is estimated the line will be out of service for a week to ten days. Reroutes over CP lines are being implemented and all alternatives including detours over other railways are being pursued. We will provide updates as available. Shipments through the area will experience a minimum of 48 hour delays.

Downstream at Minot, local officials are keeping a watch on the Souris River at Minot. Should the water rise to the levels currently in the forecast by Thursday, the Army Corps of Engineers may install dikes across CP tracks to protect local communities. We will provide further updates on this dynamic situation as it unfolds.

Here's the latest update from the CPRS on spring thaw conditions in the north:

May 3, 2011

Customer Bulletin: May 3 Update on Spring Thaw

CP's Spring Thaw Contingency Plan is in full effect as some areas in southern Manitoba, North Dakota and the U.S. Midwest experience high water.
Current outages:
  • Water levels of the Mississippi River continue to drop and CP's mainline just north of Davenport reopened Sunday moving limited traffic. We anticipate resuming normal operating levels in this corridor today.
  • The Manitoba Government has removed the dike at Emerson MB and CP's Emerson subdivision opened on Monday to very limited traffic. With the water in the area having just receded, this remains a dynamic situation that we will be monitoring very closely to ensure safe operations. Should conditions continue to improve, we anticipate resuming normal operating levels in this corridor by early next week.
  • Due to soft track conditions caused by high water, the branchline between Parshall and Newtown, ND is out of service.
